Myths have always chased hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be some type of spell while others refuse to even recognize their existence. Following are some of the well known myths about hypnosis and the truth behind them.
There is no practice of occult involved in hypnosis. Psychology and the other sciences have a critical role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very easy to acquire and practice. Even people who have witnessed hypnosis on others usually refuse to acknowledge it. They hold that the people who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to resist the impact of the practitioner. But this again is a complete fallacy. Even people with strong will power can fall under the spell of an expert hypnosis practitioner.
That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another misconception that has been doing the rounds. A hypnotized person is totally conscious of his environment. Hypnosis actually brings forth a state of complete relaxation characterized by a growth in levels of attentiveness, and this heightened sensitivity helps the subject to receive suggestions with considerable ease.
Some scientists have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another common myth. Although, the research has some shred of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the scientists used the identical hypnosis technique for everyone. People differ in their natures and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis methods to fit the temperaments of different people.
Meditation and hypnosis are usually confused with each other. However, interaction between the subject and the practitioner is indispensable in hypnosis, while meditation is like an appointment with the self without any external interaction involved. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, on the other hand the very crux of the hypnosis technique is communication.
It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring transformations in appearance or in patterns of conduct of an individual. Hypnosis is clearly not wizardry that it can change the physical appearance of a person on its own. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by changing behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.
Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have an important role to play in the well-being of an individual, and not trying them out just because of some misconceptions is a missed opportunity.
